Rating/opinion
On a scale from 1-10 i would for sure rate this book a 10. I would give it such a high rating because this book is a very action packed book and it was very meaningful if you care about the military and what they do for our people. This was also a very good book because it shows a lot of events that could have actually happened to soldiers of Vietnam. The entire time that i was reading the book i never wanted to stop reading. it was that good of a book to me, possibly because i haven't read a book in a long time
Summary
The book "Fallen Angels" by Walter Dean Myers, is a book about a young man named Richie Perry. Perry joined the military at age 17 and was very happy to be away from home. Perry met a lot of soldiers that would soon be at his side until death which was very important in the military and still is. The soldiers were each sent out to go on patrols and watch over the areas for VC or Vietcong. During this book a lot of events had taken place like how one of Perry's friends stepped on a mine and blew up which affected him a lot for a while. One day while in Vietnam the soldiers were sent on a very bad mission and didn't recover from it too well because a badly planned attack. This book was mainly about the battle in Vietnam in the authors way and this book resembles a lot of soldiers who had fought in Vietnam war.
Before all of these things had happened he met a lot of soldiers who were on his squad. one of their names were Jamal. he was a medic who was assigned to them. Perry got along quite well and wondered what the medic was thinking about. Perry always had thoughts of what people thought about which told you that he was a big time thinker. Later in the book the whole squad was going through a lot of battles and casualties which made them weaker but they couldn't ever give up.
Although there was a lot of events and things that had happened, they were very brave throughout every problem that they had faced and every objective that they had to overcome they would no matter how hard it is. The soldiers stood tall and gave everything their all which was a lot of help towards them.

Characters
Richie Perry-
Richie Perry is the main character of this story and the story is being told through his eyes. Perry is a very nice responsible person who enlisted in the army to get away from home. he has a little brother that he writes too named Kenny and he also writes to his mom every so often. Perry is very structured and has a lot of thoughts about things that go on in the story but he tries his best to get around it. He has a messed up knee from playing basketball in high-school which he could have went a long way with because of his talent, and this weakness affects his abilities to do things sometimes so that is a very big struggle for him. He was also not the military type at first, getting stomach pains when he heard helicopters, not understanding how to feel when he seen wounded or dead, and not knowing how to pray to God.
Lobel-

Lobel was a really cool guy. He was always sending off good vibes and was always a good friend to the rest of the soldiers. The reason he joined is because his dad thought that he was gay. He was a very brave, loyal, and honest soldier which made him a good soldier for sure. The only thing was that he was skinnier than any other soldier in there. Even though he wasn't the biggest or strongest he had a good heart and sometimes actually did have a mouth. Lobel was more concerned about the Vietnamese children that had to go through everything while they were at war. He always talked to Perry about the things that bothered him. Perry often went to Lobel too when he was needing support, but sometimes was a jerk to Perry when he wasn't in a good mood or when he would try to be funny.
Johnson-

Johnson was one of the highest trained soldier that carried a heavy machine gun. He was nice but at the same time had an attitude. He especially didn't get along with Peewee because of his attitude. No matter what he stayed with the team at all times and actually had a good relationship with Perry. He was a strong structured individual. especially when it came to war he was always ready to light up anything and everything in his path. He wanted to serve and protect his people at all costs.
Brunner was a very bulky man that was 6"3 and had a crazy attitude. Brunner was a really big hot head and was always mad at something which cause a lot of problems with the other soldiers. He was the definition of attitude. you mess with him you get beat up. you smart off to him you will get beat up. He was like the muscle of the 5. He was one of the meanest at the base. He was the guy that would get in a fight with anyone. Even if that meant fighting a lieutenant. He was also another soldier that carried a high powered assault rifle.
Peewee Gates-

Peewee, also known as Gates, was a very close friend to Perry. They met each other when they arrived at the military base and have been together ever since. Peewee came from a ghetto area in Chicago. Peewee is more of a fighting, sarcastic, and mouthy type of person. He never holds back on anything that comes to his mind no matter who the person hes talking to is or how much bigger that person hes talking to is compared to him. He is also always there for Perry when he needs the support or help. Peewee is a strong individual through his mind and in a way he has a lot of love and compassion also because he gets along with the Vietnamese civilians as if they are his own people.
